February 6th is National Wear Red Day to support the 1 in 3 women who die of heart disease and strokes each year. The International Sports, Skating and Fun Centre at Mt. Laurel is always happy to support any initiatives of heart health and overall well being, like this day created by the American Heart Association.
The Go Red For Women program strives to educate those who think that heart disease and strokes is just a man’s disease. In reality heart disease is women’s #1 killer, with more deaths than all forms of cancer combined. But what you should look for and consider about yourself when it comes to heart disease?
Understand that your lifestyle plays a large factor in this disease. Try to make healthy changes for yourself, your family and to be a good example. Try to make healthier food choices, stay active or exercise more, and stop bad habits like smoking, that significantly increase your risk. Also, ask your doctor to regularly check your cholesterol and blood pressure.
Roller skating has long been a recommended exercise that is good for heart health. This is because skating at low or moderate speeds is considered an “aerobic workout.” This type of aerobic workout, also known as “cardio,” spreads oxygen more efficiently throughout the body; specifically to the heart and lungs, improving overall cardiovascular health in the process.
Please join ISC Mt. Laurel in supporting healthy habits for heart health! We would love to see you at our fun open skating sessions, for birthdays or anytime! ISC Mt. Laurel is also a great place to host fundraising events if you have a cause you would like to support and promote.
