At South Jersey’s ISC Mount Laurel we thought we should bust open some roller skating myths for your reading pleasure and find out the truth (or myth) behind them. Enjoy!
Common Roller Skating Myths
Myth #1 – Tall people should not roller skate.
The idea around this myth says that taller or bigger people should, in theory, have more trouble skating and doing tricks because they have a higher center of gravity, more weight and longer bodies. If you’re scratching your head…so are we! This myth is FALSE! Height has little to do with being a successful skater. Roller skating requires the same from everyone: strong core muscles, ability to balance and endurance. While body type can be a factor for specific tricks or sports, there is never a ‘type’ that is not skate worthy!
Myth #2 – Cheap skates = Bad skates
While this idea may be true for other industries (shoes), you CAN still get a decent pair of skates at a cheaper price. If you have specific needs for a roller sport, like roller derby or artistic figure skating, then buying on the low end may not be best because you need high quality for your sport (you’d also be wearing your skates more than the casual skater too). However, for the average skater (especially for beginners and kids) roller skates on the lower end of price points are just fine. Some of the materials, such as the ABEC bearings, may have lower ratings; but all skates have an industry standard they must meet. As long as you take care of your skates (cheap or pricey), they should last you a long time! So this myth is FALSE for leisure skaters.
Myth #3 – Feeling pain lets you know you’re getting a good workout when skating.
FALSE!!! While the “no pain – no gain” mentality is alive and well in many sports, it is not something that we typically want from roller skating. Sure, sore muscles a few days after a strenuous skate are expected; but in general, you shouldn’t be in pain while skating. If you are, take a moment to investigate the cause:
- Do your skates fit you properly/are they supporting your foot and ankle?
- Do you have an old injury that may be acting up?
- Is your skating technique incorrect?
- Does the pain stop when you stop skating?
One of the great benefits of roller skating is that it is a ‘low impact sport’ that is meant to be easier on your joints and body more than other sports. If you are in pain while roller skating, please stop and try to determine the cause; skating ‘through it’ could cause serious damage in some cases. If your pain persists, it’s probably a good idea to go see your doctor as soon as you can. The sooner the problem can be addressed and corrected, the happier you’ll be on your next skate.
