Have you heard of the weird or crazy holidays? There is literally a day or National Day dedicated to every single day of the year! You can find these little known holidays on websites such as: www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays, http://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/fun/, or www.daysoftheyear.com, and many times they are irrelevant or too niche to even mention, but we wanted to draw your attention to one we are particularly excited about next Wednesday. Yes, January 27th is Chocolate Cake Day! At International Skating and Sports Center in Mt. Laurel New Jersey, we LOVE this holiday because of all the birthday parties we host! Let us explore a bit of history about the cake’s origin!
Where did cake come from?
Cakes of various forms have been around since the invention of flour. Early peoples used grain and flour to make a paste that they would then bake on a hot fire. It was not until the Greeks that cakes even became sweet, when honey was added and they became smaller. The Romans called a cake a “placenta,” and it became an offering to their gods, although this type of cake had a similar to a cheesecake. The terms “bread” and “cake” were interchangeable through the years, and it is believed that “cake” was simply a term for a small bread. Cakes became synonymous with special occasions because the cook would use the finest, and therefor more expensive, ingredients to make them.
